Due to its early 3D graphics and awkward controls, it hasn’t aged brilliantly – but at the time it blew critics away. The game saw her leaping from motorbikes on to speedboats in search of a lost Atlantean artefact. Plummily voiced by Shelley Blond, the original Lara Croft was an upper-class English action hero with two guns and a talent for one-liners. Toby wanted to create an aristocratic woman who was strong, intelligent, independent, athletic and powerful.”īranding coup … Croft on the cover of a 1997 issue of the Face. “The Spice Girls were dominating pop culture and girl power was on the rise. “While was aware that most gamers were male, and lad mags were all the rage, he didn’t want to create a page three cyber-babe for Tomb Raider,” says Livingstone. Ian Livingstone, then chairman of Tomb Raider’s publisher, Eidos, recalls that, while her exaggerated features prompted the most discussion, she was never designed to be a sex symbol. Toby Gard, an artist working at Derby gaming company Core Design, suggested a female character and came up with the design for Croft. The game that became Tomb Raider originally had a male hero. The prevailing wisdom – now disproven – was that video games starring women wouldn’t sell. Women might have loved her, but she was all we had. With her improbable proportions and minimal outfit (hot-pants and a tank top in the tundra?), she was a product for the male gaze. Photograph: Allstar/Cinetext/PARAMOUNTĪlthough she is a multilingual archaeologist with extraordinary athletic abilities, it’s hard to call the original Lara a feminist icon. Let's not blame it all on her.Strong, intelligent, powerful … Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider 2. It's the same with herĪnyway, it's just my rant. It's true that Lily never really reached out to her parents, aren't kids like that ? Especially, as the introvert person that I am, if you don't reach out to me, then you'll only see the surface but you'll never actually know me. How come they only find out afterwards that she doesn't like Beyonce, Madonna, etc.? Have they ever had a deep conversation with her ? It's uncanny to see how close they are to their nephews (Mitchell having a ritual with Haley for example, Cam helping out Manny several times). It's highlighted in the episode when they go see that Youtuber for Lily, they just assumed that she was "like the other girls that like what majority of people like" when they really could have spent time with her and get to know her interests. And her dads didn't try really that hard getting to know her and spend actual time with her.

She was this one-dimensational kid who would pop up once in a while, throw some shade and go back. But they could have shown that she was more than RBF sarcastic metal-listening girl.

I don't mind Lily being the RBF kid, we already have the cute one, the smart one, the pretty one, etc. She was just outright rude most of the time and they'd alway yuck it up on camera while her dads let her behavior slide. I don't mind a witty kid throwing some jokes in there once in a while but yeesh it got to be bit much with Lily in the later seasons especially.

And every point from there on it's just Lily throwing shade around or insulting and making faces at her family and friends. Then at the end of the episode they'd write a random hug or moral happy message about love in there and have some of the characters hug, cuddle or share a two second moment to make up for all the snark or insults they hurled at each other the other 22 minutes of the episode.Įspecially with Lily who of all people was a kid but they turned her from cute normal little kid to bitchy precocious smart ass at the age of Elementary school. They all seemed like Flanderized versions of themselves who just snarked on each other all the time and eye rolled each others actions. R/television's favorite shows of all time (2020 edition)
